    The Database Architect is responsible for leading and reviewing the database design and architecture, capacity and performance planning; providing guidance and support to Database development, installation, configuration, upgrade, maintenance, tuning and management of databases in various environments.

     

    The role is a memeber of our Database team whihc is responsible for the performance, integrity, security, planning and development of the Stamps.com database environment.

    Responsibilities

    Primary Objectives:

    1. Re-architect and create modern solutions that scale databases to support tens of thousands of transactions per second,
    2. Help shape the rapidly growing data needs by evaluating and recommending the best relational and non-relational data stores
    3. Define, design, model, implement, and operate large, evolving, structured and unstructured data sets.
    4. Work with the latest cloud database solutions for high performance and availability

    Essential Position Duties (typical monthly, weekly, daily tasks)

    1. Re-architect and create modern solutions that scale databases to support tens of thousands of transactions per second.
      • Determines database structural requirements by analyzing client operations, applications, and programming; reviewing objectives with clients; evaluating current systems;
    2. Help shape the rapidly growing data needs by evaluating and recommending the best relational and non-relational data stores.
      • Suggests areas for improvement in system performance along with possible solutions.
      • Analyze database development and design processes and create best practices and standards.
      • Holds status meetings, as appropriate, with interdepartmental project team.
      • Maintains database performance by identifying and resolving production and application development problems; calculating optimum values for parameters; evaluating, integrating, and installing new releases; completing maintenance; answering user questions.
      • Resolves and/or escalates issues in a timely fashion.
    3. Define, design, model, implement, and operate large, evolving, structured and unstructured data sets
      • Develops database solutions by designing proposed system; defining database physical structure and functional capabilities, security, back-up, and recovery specifications.
      • Work with engineering and business stakeholders to understand data requirements.
    4. Work with the latest cloud database solutions for high performance and availability.
      • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

    Qualifications

    Required Education and/or Experience:                                                              

    • A Bachelor’s of Science or equivalent years’ experience.
    • Minimum Five (5) years of hands on Database development and administration experience for high volume, scalable, data-intensive SQL Server.
    • Cloud platform and NO SQL experience as a plus.
       

    Skills and Knowledge:

    • Have a broad understanding of database architecture, standards and management. Understand best-of-breed database solutions and tools available in the market.
    • Deep knowledge and experience in architecting/designing large scale distributed systems
    • Broad knowledge of common applications and technologies in internet computing (web servers, database servers, load balancers etc.)
    • Expertise with highly-available platform database technology including clustering, replication, mirroring, etc. Preference will be given to candidates with solid transactional replication experience and troubleshooting.
    • Flexible, adaptable, and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
    • The ability to respond to sudden changes in major project parameters in a rational and effective fashion.
    • Demonstrate a good understanding of current industry standard and best practices.
    • Ability to communicate complex ideas in a progressive, linear and easy-to-follow manner
    • Excellent written and oral communication including the ability to speak to large groups of people
    • An ability to maintain composure in crisis situations
    • A direct and open style of communication that leads to full transparency
    • A clear understanding of how product quality is defined, measured and verified 
    • A clear understanding of project management concepts and processes

     

    Travel Requirements:

    • Occasional, less than 10%
